Local and national teams took home honors in the WGI Sport of the Arts World Championships last week in Dayton. The top finishers of the color guard portion of the WGI Championships came from Indiana, New Jersey, California, Georgia and New York.

Avon High School, from just west of Indianapolis, was the scholastic champion in the World Class Finals. World is the top class, followed by Open, then followed by A, according WGI officials.

Local scholastic teams in the World Class Finals included Bellbrook and Miamisburg high schools, who finished in 11th and 12th place, respectively.

In the Open Class Scholastic division, Centerville (2nd), Northmont (5th) and Mason (8th) all finished in the top 10.

Kettering Fairmont was the top local finisher in the Scholastic A Class Finals, taking 14th place.

Dayton’s Onyx team took 10th place in the Independent World finals.

The second installment of the annual event, the Percussion World Championships, is scheduled for this weekend, April 18-20 at Hobart Arena in Troy.
